South Africa’s biggest comedy brand, Blacks Only, is coming to Durban for one night only with a side-splitting line-up that includes comedy giant DavidKau and some of the country’s hottest black comics including “honorary black” Chris Forrest.

 

Blacks Only, presented by Real Comedy, takes to the Opera Theatre stage at the Durban Playhouse on Saturday, July 14. The show – which has taken laughter all over the country for the past eight years – is taking place for only the second time inKwa-Zulu Natal.

Kau will reprise his role as the MC. Kwa-Zulu Natal’s two favourite funnymen, Sifiso Nene and Mondli Mzizi, are also on the bill as well as honorary black man for the night, Chris Forrest. They will be sharing the stage with comic heavyweightsDonovan Goliath, Skhumbuzo Hlophe, Chris Mapane and Thapelo Seemise.

David Kau needs little introduction and his name is synonymous with many firsts. At the age of 32, this Kroonstad-born comic began his career as the first black stand-up comedian in the 1998 Smirnoff Comedy Festival in Cape Town -the only black person on stage out of 44 comics. Of his material Kau says: “It isn’t all influenced by politics – instead it’s always about what’s current.”

Having been at the forefront of South Africa’s comedy scene for close to 10 years, Chris Forrest’s unique dry sense of humour has made him one of the country’s most popular comedians. He speaks slowly but he thinks quickly. Bestknown for his TV appearances in the Pure Monate Show, he’s also had roles on Komplex and the Emmy nominated episode of Sorted.

Donovan David Goliath (his real name) describes himself as a Caucasian-looking coloured guy from Mthatha who speaks Xhosa. His act includes a lot of storytelling and simple insights using various characters and impersonations to gethis message across.

Skhumba Hlophe a Tembisan born comic who blazed the Soweto/Tshwane Comedy Festival. His larger than life comedy has thrilled audiences and critics alike and his comedy has a heavy Kasi style. Skhumba loves telling people that he isan international comedian because he has performed in Witbank.

Chris Mapane is the name to watch out for on the local comedy circuit. Regarded as one of the most energetic comedians on stage, his observant nature and ability to stay current with his topics, has made him an audiencefavourite.

Mondli Mzizi was the winner of the coveted SATMA Award for Best Indigenous Comedian Winning this award made his to be recognisable not just as a Durban comedian but a well-recognised South African comedian.

Sifiso Nene is the winner of the first season of the So You Think You Are Funny. His style is a daring blend of casual observation of South African life and current affairs. He has appeared at major shows around the country and wasrecently seen in the film Taxi Ride.

Thapelo Seemise, otherwise known as Tips (Thru Inspiration People Succeed), started doing comedy when he made it to the Top 6 of So U Think Ur Funny and worked his way to big shows like Blacks Only and Tshwane Comedy Fest to being aregular at Parkers. Recently he wrote and acted in the Mzansi movie Taxi Ride as the much loved character Shampoo.

DJ Franky has been spinning the decks for 10 years and is regarded as one of the country’s leading house music DJs. In 2011 he released his debut album Tonight. Franky plays music throughout the show, and interacts with David Kau togive the show some fine ‘tuning’.

Tickets for Blacks Only are available at Computicket priced between R120 and R150 excluding Computicket’s service fee.

The show starts at 9pm and runs for two and a half hours with an intermission.
